Jobs and Pipe lines


When I grow up I want to be a...


After a lecture on the gaming industry and the pipeline of work, I've decided to set myself some goals and skills to improve.


However, these need to be necessary and skills that will help me achieve my goals; of course the best place to look is from a Job description.

"SENIOR CONCEPT ARTIST

The Senior Concept Artist is responsible for interpreting written and verbal direction into visual solutions. They will partner closely with the Art Director and the Concept Art team to generate a variety of thumbnail sketches, colour studies and production ready visual targets. You should be an avid gamer and keep up to date with the latest shooter games and have a passion for the Gears of War franchise and Science Fiction genre. The candidate must be able to execute concepts in a wide variety of styles that fit the product tone and to various degrees of detail that fit within the production timelines. The Concept Artist is also expected to liaison with Design to ensure the proposed ideas are meeting the game play requirements.

RESPONSIBLITIES:

- Translate written and verbal direction into visual solutions.
- Work closely with Design ensuring concepts are meeting game play expectations.
- Explore multiple solutions for a single problem.
- Over paint white box environments for model/texture artists.
- Generate orthographic drawings for model/texture artists.
- Work closely with the Project Art Manager to ensure tasks are tracked accurately.

REQUIREMENTS:

- 7+ years’ experience in videogame production or equivalent experience.
- Experience working on the Gears of War franchise a significant advantage.
- Expertise in environment, vehicle and character design.
- Deep understanding of colour, tone and lighting.
- Deep understanding of composition and visual storytelling.
- Can design for a wide variety of styles (photo-realistic, highly stylized, etc.).
- Highly collaborative individual who values feedback and direction.
- Interested in pop culture and trend watching."

I think this shows that I'm not skilled enough to enter industry yet, but a lot of the skills required I understand. Most of them I am currently developing on my university course and through taking up leading roles and looking into part time work, I feel I will learn a lot of soft skills to go with my in-depth art skills, that I hope to develop over my time on the course.
